Ratibida columnifera (upright prairie coneflower / 'Mexican hat') is another colourful new addition to our perennials collection this week. This hardy North American wildflower features taller cones and more drooping petals than other traditional coneflowers (Echinacea) creating a distinctive resemblance to a sombrero (hence the commonly used name of 'Mexican hat').

New in our Collector's Corner this week - the amazing Acacia glaucoptera (Clay Wattle). This WA species features unusual flowers and seed pods which appear along the striking flat foliage. The young foliage is an attractive reddish colour with regular pruning producing lots of new growth plus keeping the shrub neat and tidy.

Acacia glaucoptera can do well in local conditions if grown in freely-draining soil in a full sun position - images here are garden plants growing near Corunna, NSW. Native potting mix is a great option for this species in the garden - mixed in well with existing soil.

Achilleas (Yarrow) are very hardy and attractive perennials which feature clusters of flattened flower heads on upright stems from spring into summer - plus fragrant, fern-like foliage. They are very bee friendly and well known for attracting butterflies to the garden.

Eucomis comosa 'Sparkling Burgundy' (Pineapple Lily) is a hardy strap-leaved perennial which features both dramatic reddish foliage and large purple-stemmed flower spikes of star-shaped flowers in summer. The rosette of young leaves at the tip of the flower spikes resemble those of pineapples. The eye-catching foliage adds colour and architectural structure all year round with the compact plants (60cm x 60cm) ideal for use in garden beds, edges or containers.

Although they look tropical Eucomis love a warm dry spot in the garden and can be grown together with other summer-flowering perennials like Echinacea to great stunning displays.

Our Eucomis are currently starting to flower well in the nursery despite the recent heat. We're open on Sunday from 9pm to 2pm in Tilba Tilba.

Santolina chamaecyparissus (cotton lavender) is a very hardy perennial option for summer colour and attractive foliage. Most forms feature fine grey foliage and yellow button flowers across the warmer months but we also have the 'Petit Blanc' variety in stock with white flowers and darker green foliage.

Santolinas love a sunny spot in the garden and can even be grown in dry spots with poorer soil. Their compact habit means they can be used for low hedging and borders or mass plantings. They also do well in pots and containers.

We have several yellow flowering Santolina varieties in stock - plus 'Petit Blanc'. If you're popping down to Tilba before Christmas we will be open the three mornings heading into Christmas (8am until 12 noon) if you need to track down some last minute plants or gifts!

'Annabelle' is a beautiful compact form of Hydrangea arborescens which features large heads of white flowers (up to 30cm across). The flowers start off green before turning white/cream and then returning to green again. One group of perennials starting to flower in both the garden and the nursery this week are the amazing Digiplexis hybrid foxgloves.

These were developed by crossing a hardy, frost tolerant foxglove (Digitalis) with the rare Canary Island plant Isoplexis canarienses. to produce hybrid foxgloves that are much longer flowering (up to six months from mid-spring to mid-autumn), semi-evergreen (rather than biennial) and more resistant to rust and fungal spot than most traditional Digitalis.

We have a range of colours in stock this week - with flowers just starting to emerge on many of them. These will look stunning in full flower in another week or so.
